MMB Generalate, Marathakkara
In the beginning the Congregation of the Malabar Missionary Brothers had no Houses of its own. Initial formation of the candidates was started in a diocesan building of the diocese of Thrissur. Next year the first apostolate service of brothers was started in a rented building at Irinjalakuda in the form of Home for the elderly men, House of Providence. Next year the Mother House was inaugurated at Mariapuram and named as Mission Home. The formation also shifted to Mission Home. In 1967 “Alverniya Asharm” was established at Peechi. In the year 1959 onwards the superior took the responsibility of day to day administration but the central administration was under a priest, Fr. Director. Hence the central administrative needs and facilities were not properly settled.
In the appointment of Superior General during 1972, Brothers had to concentrate in the Generalate office work. When Bro. Louis Manjaly took up the responsibility of Superior General, in the year 1973 the Generalate office was shifted to “Madonna Sehiona” at Kachery, Thrissur, a diocesan retreat centre, and office work was started there. Studying the method of the office work of other religious congregations, he adopted it in the MMB Generalate. He could execute his plans as he got six years in two terms as Superior General.
Bro. Gabriel Pazhayattil who became the Superior General in the year 1979 had to face difficult situations. As the retreat centre of Madonna Sehiona had to be handed over to the Thrissur Diocese, the functioning of the Generalate House was shifted to the limited facilities at St. Zacharias Home, Mariapuram. This adverse situation led the Congregation to find a place with more convenience. With the hard work of brothers they found a building at Rice Bazar, heart of the city of Thrissur and purchased it. The juniorate formation house, “MMB Vidya Bhavan” was started there. Later it was shifted to East Fort, Thrissur. In 1983, the Generalate was shifted there.
As the Congregation was bifurcated as two Provinces as St. Thomas Province, South India and Assisi Province, North India, the administration was in crisis due to the limitation of place and facilities of Generalate. Thus due to the elaborate search, found suitable land at Marathakkra during the year 2002 when late Bro. Victor Kalampukatt was the Superior General. Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, Archbishop of Thrissur laid the foundation stone on February 11, 2003 and it was blessed and inaugurated by the same Archbishop on September 05, 2005. This house is equipped with modern facilities for the needs of the present and the future also.
Now Bro. Bastin Karuvelil is serving the Congregation as the Superior General. Bro. Devaraj Plackayil is the General Finance Officer and Bro. Sani Anchannickal as superior. The Brothers are whole heartily co-operating with all parish activities.
